3D Printing and Post processing Howl’s Moving Castle

The goal of this post is to describe step by step how we printed and post post processed the marvelous moving Castle from the movie.

First, the model!

This amazing model you can get via myminifactory.com
and was created by Mag-Net. If you like this model don’t forget to support the artists!

Second, Printing!

For this print we used a combination of filaments only because we had them and they were getting old. So better to use them before they become too brittle by age or humidity.

  • Grey PLA is no name generic PLA, bought two years ago by kilo without spool (mistake)
  • Polar White PLA was from Print-me.pl
  • Dark grey PLA, it is easy-PLA from Fiberlogy.pl. Very nice color and texture, initially has a matte finish but after printing it becomes shiny. It also came as a refill for the master spool system, which has worked perfectly.

All parts were printed using generic PLA settings in a Prusa MK3 and a 0.2 mm layer height.

Here are shown almost all the printed parts which were later glued together using Cyanoacrylate glue. The eyes, tongue and feet we forgot to take a picture of them in the printing bed. The printed parts came out perfect and minimal sanding was needed at least for our needs, the layers are visible but in some parts they make even for a more interesting surface pattern so we decided to save some effort and not sand all the model.

Third,  Gluing, Priming and Painting!

After printing and gluing together, applying first coat of primer this was the result, also, we forgot to add the ears and fins, but had no problem to add them later. After finishing a third coat of primer we started painting, And we were having a hard time to decide on the colors to use but we will try to paint the castle more on the bright happy color and not so dark.

Some updates on the painting. The yellow shaft does not look as good as imagined so it will change in the future. Also, we started too early with detailing, always start with your base colors then add details later. Next time it we will remember.
